Old Photo's of Baul Saint Nabani Das Khyeppa Baul, the Baul that inspired Rabindranath Tagore.

This photo was taken by Rabindranath Tagore, Nabani Das Khyeppa Baul was probably one of the last real Bauls to walk on earth... Being a Baul back then was a very difficul t life in Bengal, if anybody thinks it is difficult today, back in Nabani's time it was super difficult.

Even in the last 50 years during Babukishan time he was telling how difficult to educate people about Baul back in the 1960's to now... they traveled and made arrangements all over the globe by mail.. If not for Purna Das Baul his father nobody would know what or who a Baul is because it was him who traveled and sang for the past almost 80 years. It is easy to sit on the side line and criticize who is Baul and what has happened to the Baul of Bengal but remember if you can do something instead of talking and criticizing it would be most appreciated.

There are very few people today who understand what and who the Bauls are. I often get oh the Bauls do not speak sanskrit.. that is completely wrong they did speak Sanskrit and were the biggest Sanskrit Scholars in the Oral Tradition the young generation and when I say young I mean the people who have only observed the Bauls for the past 30 or 40 years do not know who the Bauls are because the ones that have come after this time period do not speak Sanskrit, most do not even know who wrote what song or the discourses behind the songs, Baul is really being sold as something it was never meant to be.. Sad but True and all Ok this is the way of the world.

Nabani Das Khyeppa Baul was legendary in India, he never left India, it was Purna Das Baul and Laxshman Das Baul his 2 son's who were the first Bauls to leave India on their fathers advice to Sally Grossman and her husband Albert B Grossman and Allen Ginsberg. You have to know that no Baul had ever been out of India expect Purna Das Baul in the 1950's he went to Russia..

Manju Dasi and Babukishan, also worked endlessly trying to preserve the Bauls, doing concerts around the world, teaching at Universities and giving Baul some respectability. It may seem like it was easy but it was not as their English was weak and there were no computers or telephones from India to the world.. it was very expensive..they gave up their life to preserve the Baul of Bengal.

Others Bauls have followed or tried to follow in their foot steps. Babu and his family opened the doors for all Bauls whether they have tried to do the same and have been successful who knows, it seem today people are more confused today. This lineage family of Bauls has been traveling for more that 70 years.. Babukishan for more than 40...

Purna Das Baul was given the title Baul Samarat by the first President of India
Rajendra Prasad (1884-1963) he was given the award because he was India's first Vocal singer outside of India to win a Gold Metal for his vocal performance at the Russian Youth Festival which included participants such as Indian Cinema super star Raj Kapoor, Nagis.. ect..He was the first Gold Metal for Bengal from a Baul, nobody knew what a Baul was.. ...he did not give himself this title, it was an honour bestowed upon him and yes he has it on the outside of his house and he should be proud as he was given many, many titles, awards and honours over his almost 80 years, he is a great singer. After this so many politicians he sang to including Russian President, American President and in India at every political function in India.. Purna Das Baul brought Baul to an international platform... before this Baul was no where just in the Village. He was very close to Indira Gandhi and he received his second Presidents Award for 'Lifetime Achievement and International Cultural Ambassador for India" from Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, Babukishan knows he was there and was totally dedicated to his father along with his mother Manju Das. No Baul or singers has achieved or come close to what he has achieved. Nabani Das his father was the great illusive Avadhuta Baul who was written about and respected by great Poets and Authors of his time, just because the young people do not know or remember, does not mean it was so.. Nabani Das was not only a Sadhaka he also was a freedom fighter and gave up so much to his country.

If any other Baul can accomplish what these Bauls have done on their own merit please let it be so but that does not change history. Babu is preserving this lineage because this is the only Bauls that have made a platform for Bauls and Bengal Culture making an international platform from the village to the World..

They started off so poverty stricken, it was Sitaram Das Omkarnath who suggested to Purna Das Baul to sing on the trains... there is a whole story about this, before Purna Das Baul ..NO Baul sang on the trains of India. Nabani was a wandering Sadhu and Avadhuta Tantric and gone all the time. The times were different, he did not stay home until Babu was born and left in his care and he named Babu Krishnendu Das Baul... these were the 8 years Babu was attached at Nabani's hip, in some ways it was one of the biggest Grace's of his life.

And may I add that Babukishan is the first Baul to ever be educated with a BA and MA from Calcutta University.. he is the first Baul to be a Music Composer, Film Maker and Producer he is the first Baul to Live in North America, he made it easier for the new Bauls all the traveling and interviews on TV books and education.. he is the first Multi talented Baul and he is a Baul and has done it all on his own merit.. no help from his family and no complaining. He is first Baul to record Baul and produce. His contribution is astronomical time wise and devotion wise.

He still has all the songs of his lineage inside of him as his memory is like a lazer... he remembers every story, every detail.... Why I suspect because he learned Sanskrit in the Oral Tradition.. The Bauls today do not know this so they say ..oh it is against Baul to know Sanskrit we just love and talk about Tantric Sex... that is the biggest load ever heard.. The Bauls spoke Sanskrit just because they do not today because they are extinct does not mean they didn't.. There is so much garbage on the internet being spread.. I mean Bengal needs to face it that the Bauls are extinct, for whatever reason?? Don't blame ... do something about it, if you want to complain about it, simple do something..

And Please donate generously to the Bauls in Bengal, the ones in the village who are struggling if you are making documentaries, they really need understanding and help. It will take a village no one person can do it all. Babukishan has been trying to help for 50 years only to have everything he has done destroyed. It would be great to support his vision rather than criticizing.

The idea Babukishan had when he created the Guduri was Love, Peace and Unity between all people. As the Ektara or Gopi Chand is the symbol of Love Peace and Unity so should their dress express this as they traveled to festivals around the world..

At first Babukishan was endlessly criticized about it when his Dad first started wearing it, but then many fell in love with it and Babukishan received many compliments from people such as Dr. Ananda Shankar Roy, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, Pranab Mukerjee and Mrs Subra Mukerjee now the President of India.. Tv Producer Abhijit Das Gupta, Jyoti Basu W Bengal former chief Mininster, Diretor General of India Radio.. Dr Bhupeen Hazarika, Mithun Charabhorty, Bapi Lahari.. MF Huissen, Amarta Sen, Chuni Goswami and Allen Gisnberg... all Babu's well wishers and they all loved his design.. the design the new Bauls are wearing and do not even know where it came from.
Guduri, this patchwork dress that the Bauls are wearing today was created by Babukishan in the 1970's, as an attractive dress for Purna Das Baul. This costume was on record covers, magazines covers and festival performances all over the world. He created this multi coloured dress for a symbol of oneness, unity and peace for the world. A Symbol of no caste, no creed, all colors in one, multi-cultural.

Babu created this dress for his dad because in his mind he wanted to preserve Baul and while they were attending all the festival, concert hall, and doing lectures this dress would draw to what Baul was a multi coloured lineage.

Most Baul performers are wearing this dress today without even knowing who the master minded behind it is. Babukishan would go around to all the tailors and collect bright colors and his mother Manju Das would sew them together by hand creating this bright Baul costume.

Babu wanted this  dress to promote his father Purna Das Baul at all festivals around the world including Poush Mela. No matter what most Bauls follow this lineage, they sing the songs from this lineage, they sing Purna Das Bauls songs, they sing songs written by Nabani Das Baul and Babukishan and all their relatives.. and they even dress like this lineage... without even knowing where things came from..

Beloved Radha & Krishna of the Vaishnava Bauls of Bengal they have been worshiping them for thousands of years. The Vaishnava Bauls of Bengal are "The Rasa Lila Mystics" ancestors of Sri Nityananda (Nitai) of Ekkchakra Bengal India. Sri Nityananda was the elder best friend of Sri Chaitanya and one of Chaitanya's Guru's...

Some of the Lineage is as follows, (Nabani Das Baul took Gosai off of their name because he did not want anybody touching his feet, he said, touch your own feet, bow down to the divine within yourself.)

1. Sri Nityananda,
2. his son Birbhadra (Gosai),
3. Advaita Gosai,
4. Khepa Chand Gosai
5. Rasaraj Gosai,
6. Ananto Gosai,
7. Okkur Gosai & Triguna Das,
8. Phuru Dasi,
9. Nabani Das & Brajabala Dasi,
10.Annapurna Dasi, Radharani Dasi, Purna Das, Lakshman Das, Chakrdhar Das...
11. Krishnendu Das Baul who is the eldest of the new generation of Bauls and probably the last trained in the oral tradition of Sanskrit. (I will add more in time..)

This whole lineage goes back thousands of years but I started listing it from the beginning of Gaudiya Vaishnavism...late 1500's

Vaishnava Bauls lived a vegetarian, Sanskrit oral traditional Vaishnava life that was spontaneous and natural. The had one wife, one husband all their life, and if they had more than one it was with great respect, they did not sleep with other people wives as stated by the new age Vaishnavism and some were even sanayas all their life.
(I only qualify this part because there is a huge misconception because of one British born Vaishnava reformer wrote something back in the 1800's and it is still being passed around in certain circles as pure ignorance.)

Today Bauls are almost extinct and they are like any indigenous group of original people on this planet who are not being supported, who can not survive in this world and today they have to modernize or die, if you are modern why not the Bauls.

The real Bauls are sweet and innocent ecstatic lovers or the love. Radha and krishna live in their hearts as Sita and Ram lives in Hanuman's heart. Bauls love all Devata. A true Vaishnava always has mercy,Respect for all living things and they never irritates others or call others names. They are about Peace, Love and Unity, accepting all.

Baul is simple but it is not a beginners path they have been around for thousands of years, they are not a new movement as is written by some scholars only because they are not from inside the tradition and can only speculate. Most people who write about the Bauls have never had any connection to this lineage or the oral lineage of Vaishnavism in Bengal.

Baul is the path of the Avadhuta beyond all cultures, caste and creed. Bauls believe in both Duality and Non Duality. They are an ocean..

Bauls areTri Devata including Radha/Krishna, Kali?Shiva and Brahma/Saraswati. As Buddhism flowed into Bengal naturally they added the Rasa of Buddhism, and as Sufi entered Bengal they as added the Juice or essence of Sufi. However, it should always be understood Bauls are based on Indian Philosophy, Santan Dharma. Bauls are also Tantric (techniques of the macro and mircro cosmos.) Again I must qualify because not all Bauls are Tantrics at Tara Pith this is rare for a Baul from this lineage as Nabani Das Baul and Babuksihan are the only ones in this lineage. A Baul must experience everything, they have different Guru's to learn different things... in Babukishan's case he learned the Oral Tradition of Baul for almost 30 years before he taught... He also was a monk in the Ramakrishna Order for 12 years.. he has 50 years of experience and to this day is really not teaching.. There quest is for the divine and it takes many years experience in the world as the Avadhuta traveling India learning from nature, the Baul now travels the world learning.

Sanskrit-ists they now sing in Bengali because that is the language of the villagers.

It takes at least 12 years if not a life or many life times to really become a Baul. Bauls are Guru's, and Acharya's they are Masters in all Indian Philosophy, Bhakti Yoga, and Tantra and should be able to answer any question if they want. They do not collect devotee's and are mysterious and illusive. It is not easy to get anything out of a Baul, it takes years of trust first. Perhaps that will change because of the time. Babukishan is the first and only Baul to live in North America.

The Untold stories from the forgotten Oral Tradition.
The Vaishnava Bauls have a great Respect and Love for the Feminine Divine and they always Puja's Radha first. They are natural and spontaneous God intoxicated Mystics who say everybody and everything is Divine.

The Ektara their one stringed Indian Folk instrument is their symbol of Peace Love and Unity they call the Ektara "the Gopi Chand." Bauls of Bengal accept all rejected people as Divine.

Originally Sanskrit Speaking people, now almost extinct..
In 2005 UNESCO declared, the Bauls of Bengal:

'A Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible History of Humanity'
Not your regular Baul
Nabani Das Baul was a Wild Kheppa Baul, a Sadhaka, A wandering sadhu, yogi, siddha Baul...
A well known sadhaka @ Tarapith...
Yes, also Vaishnava but each and everyone has our own path and in Baul this is allowed.
Bauls are not pedantic, they are lovers of Love, pure Bhakti Yoga....and lovers of all the Divine..

Nabani Khepa sat in his asana and began his daily ritual: he packed his panchamukhi chillum with a fine mixture of tobacco and hashish. When it was ready, he dabbed it with snake venom, which he kept in a tiny mother of pearl casket. Silence reigned supreme.

Suddenly a morol, an elder with a voice in the village's affairs, burst in on Nabani: "Father, get ready to leave for Bakreswar immediately!" ... "There has been a death in the village. It is our custom that when someone dies on the day of Nabanya, all of us must accompany the body to the cremation in Bakreswar, and then bathe in the Jivanakund to be prified.

So saying, the man left. Nabani turned to his wife, Brajabala : "We are leaving this village this instant".

His tone made the children realise the gravity of his statement. As they left, Nabani lit his five-headed pipe and sucked on it, crying "Jai guru!"

After a long time, Brajabala turned to Nabani: "Why did we leave the village?"

The response was simple. "How can a Baul live among people who expect him to run after a corpse?"

Sahajaya, it is beyond Orthodox, Fun-da-mentalism or fake devotion, and it certainly does not mean sex....It means Pure Natural, Spontaneous Sacred, Mystical, Respect and Love all !!

Photo taken by Rabindranath Tagore, of his friend and Baul inspiration Nabani Das Khappa Baul

Sahaja copied from Yogi Ananada's Saraswathi's article on Dattatreya... Baul is Sahja Vaishnavism, there are many who are now just discovering Sahajaya Vaishnavism from Bengal... Baul is and always has been Sahajaya for thousands of years. The term Sahajaya has been totally misused by modern day orthodox Vaishnava reformers from Bengal. You can use the term Vaishnava Sahajaya to describe what one thinks as an original concept but it is not original it is as old as Vaishnavism itself and the Vaishnava Baul of Bengal knew this thousands of years back. Sri Nitai or Nityananda was a Vaishnava Sahajaya Baul of Bengal an oral tradition not a book tradition although yes they could read sanskrit and kept many ancient sanskrit texts.. They looked at everything, the Bauls were both Radha and Krishna/ Shiva and Kali..Everything is inside the Baul, yet the Baul remains untouched. There is nothing sinister about Sahajaya or Sahaja Vaishnavism it is sacred and natural.

"Sahaja simply means natural. It not only implies natural on physical and spiritual levels, but on the mystic level of the miraculous. It means that easy or natural state of living without planning, design, contriving, seeking, wanting, striving or intention. It is that nature which, when once established, brings the state of absolute freedom and peace. Sahaja is a natural state which balances reality between the pairs of opposites and maintains harmony of the Cosmos. Thus ‘sahaja’ expresses one who has reverted to his natural state, free from conditioning. It typifies the outlook which belongs to the natural, spontaneous and uninhibited man, free from innate or inherited defects. As such even nakedness of the sadhus is considered to be ‘sahaja’. By his own demeanor Datta shows man’s instinct for naturalness and primordial perfection not only of the physical and spiritual level but at the mystical level. A parallel is made to plants and trees which do not grow according ‘svadharma’ or rules and obligations incurred at birth. Nature only has ‘svabhava’ meaning its own inborn self or essence as its guidance. In other words ‘what is to come must come of itself’ to manifest in a state of absolute freedom. Taoism speaks of ‘sahaja’ as a highest virtue – the loss of the peculiar naturalness or unselfconsciousness. One finds this state in an innocent child which is always in its ‘sahaja’ state unless interfered to by society. In his semi-naked state Datta was just as unconscious of others nakedness as he was of his own. “The person who has conquered the baser self and has reached to the level of self mastery: he is at peace, whether it be in cold or hot, pleasure or pain, honoured or dishonoured" – Bhagavad Gita.

It is said that one would only comprehend the Avadhuta Gita after understanding the word ‘samsara’. It is also found in the Upanishads and Tantra scriptures where the sages used the word to mean ‘higher truths’. What is ‘higher truth?’ It means the essential unity of all things -- of all existence, the equipoise of equanimity, the supreme bliss of harmony, that which is aesthetically balanced, undifferentiated unity, absolute assimilation, the most perfect unification and the highest consummation of Oneness. KD Babukishan - Osho - the Bauls of Bengal

Babukishan - Osho - & The Bauls of Bengal

Babukishan aka Krishnendu Das Baul is a Vaishnava Baul from Birth born in the village of Suri Birbhum, W Bengal given at birth to his grandparents Nabani Das Kheppa Baul and Brajabala Dasi they named him Krishnendu now KD Babukishan.

Osho knew Babukishan personally because at the time he was working for CBS in Bombay and Osho wanted all his talks ect produced. Along came Babukishan the first Baul Osho had met. Osho did not know any other Bauls, but like most people he was deeply inspired by the Bauls of Bengal. Osho wrote 2 books on Bauls that are not completely accurate, but still in print today. In one of their many converstations Babukishan asked Osho to change the books to make them more accurate, Osho agreed and said he would but he passed away in 1990 at only the age of 58, before these books could be changed. Babukishan spent many, many hours with OSHO talking about the Bauls of Bengal and he produced most of the music and tapes that are for sale today.

The books on Baul Osho wrote are way too simplistic with many assumptions made about who and what the Bauls of Bengal are, you must remember Osho is not a Baul he is not from Bengal.

Osho said Bauls were not philosophers, that is not true they are the biggest of philosophers, they are poets and most Bauls are singing the poetry from this lineage the Lineage of Nabani Das Khyappa Baul or Lalon Fakir's poetry which nobody knew until this family went back to Bangladesh in the 1970's and recorded it thus Baul became associated with Lalon Fakir.

Manju Das, (Babu's birth mother) was from Bangladesh, her fatherJogesh Das was a Sanskrit Professor (With 3 Masters Degree's) at Dhakha University, in 1952 they had to flee for their lives because Jogesh Das spoke Bengali and Sanskrit and at the time Bangladesh was being Islamised by the Pakistani's and if you didn't speak Urdu you were either dead or you had to flee for your life. There were no Bauls in Bangladesh in those day or very few, there however, Dervish, Fakir, Sai,and Shah which somehow got lumped in as Baul but they are not they are all Sufi. Baul for thousand of years has been based on Indian Philosophy, they accepted all people who rejected by other groups including Sufi. and as Sufi and flowed into Bengal the rejected Sufi came to the Bauls they Bauls learned the juice of Sufi but that does not mean they became Sufi, this also happened with the Buddhist's as they flowed into Bengal the Bauls accepted the rejected people and embraced thier philosophical gems but again this does not mean Bauls are Buddhist. Bauls are based on the ancient Sanatana Dhrama of India, I do not like to use the term Hinduism as it is a religion and Baul is a Dharma not a religion, Bauls are Tantric Bhakti Yogi's and this lineage is based on Vaishnava. A Vaishnava based on pure love and respect not the kind that has incarnated to the West of abuse and name calling. Vaishnava Bauls are sweet and humbler that an blade of grass, they have survived the British, the Muslim invaders, disease, famine and now in 2012 are almost extinct because of modern society. Bauls talked about everybody, you will not necessarily find that with Sufi or other groups mostly they talk about Allah or their own God, The Bauls always accepted all, they are the original Peacemakers of the planet and have something to teach the world at this time. In 2005 UNESCO said, The Bauls are an Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible History of Humanity.

Many students at the University of Dhakka were killed during the 1952 student protests Wikipedia only mentions 4 there were many others including Jogesh Das's brother who was beheaded.

Baul is simple if you grew up with the Guru and spoke sanskrit, learning all the philosophy from birth it is really easy if you are from the lineage. It is a Guru parampara tradition, too many people write inaccuracies about he Bauls because Bauls do not give out information easily. Babukishan also knows most of the scholars who have written books about the Bauls and he himself has written 3 books about the Bauls back in the 1980's, the real Bauls are basically extinct they need accurate preservation not speculation and a rewriting of what is already inaccurately written.

This below statement made by Osho is accurate is some ways and in some ways if you take this literally it is totally inaccurate and over simplified. What Osho said regarding the Bauls of Bengal is just fluff he never knew any Bauls other than Babukishan and he had written the books before he met Babu and passed away before he could fulfill his promise to Babukshan to change the books.

Worldwide Copyright all rights reserved 2012 as this is all being written about and will be in our book "Baul Unplugged. The true story of The Bauls of Bengal written by a living lineage holder. by Babukishan aka Krishnendu Das Baul
"To be a Baul nothing is needed. In fact, the moment you need nothing, you become a Baul. The moment you are unburdened and you don't possess anything, any past, you are a Baul. No, things like that are never originated. Nobody creates them; they happen. They are part of nature.

Setting the Record straight.. A Baul song sang in Hindi for the first time. This is Babu's first film music in Hindi he had composed many times in Bengali since he was about 8 or 9 years of age.

Purna Das Baul did not score this, his eldest son Krishnendu Das aka Babukishan scored the music. On the movie cover it will state Krishnendu Das Baul on the album Babu gave his Dad's name out of Love and Respect to his parents as Purna Das wanted to be known as a Music Director. Babukishan  in fact composed this music and arranged the music. (Flute Chandakant Nandi, Dotara and Banjo by Paltan, Khol Babukishan, Percussion Manju Das Khamak and singing Purna Das, lyrics Niraj. Purna Das Baul was the best Baul singer ever.

Samarat Purna Das Baul with SitaRamDas Omkarnath

You can see Sitaram Das Omkarnath sitting on a chair at a Baul Samarat Purna Chandra Das's concert in Calcutta.. Sitaramdas Omkarnath was a close associate of Nabani Das Baul and as one of Purna D Baul Guru's he suggested to Purna as a child to sing on the trains in India before this no Baul ever sang on the trains in India. Another thing most people do not know Sitaram Das Omkarnath was the person who brought Anadamayi Ma to the limelight, because in India in those days it was almost impossible for a women to come forward. There are many pictures of Sitaram Das Omkarnath and Anandamayi Ma together.

Babukishan's video of his Father, Mother his Aunt Radharani Das, Uncle Chakra Das Baul and Laxshman Das Baul for the early 1980"s

This is a video of a Concert that Babukishan aka Krishnendu Das Baul arranged at Rabindra Sadan in Calcutta. He arranged the concert in honor of his Grandfather Nabani Das Khyappa Baul. This is Babukishan's video as he is the one who recorded it for the preservation of The Bauls of Bengal to bring his family together. His father Purna Das Baul is singing, along with his 2 uncles, his aunt Radharani Dasi is sitting on the floor in a white Sari singing and at the far end his mother Manju Dasi is playing the Harmonium and singing. Babukishan has an extensive library of rare recordings that he had stored in his home in Calcutta, it was surprising to see this video uploaded without his consent to this Youtube page????  This video is the intellectual and creative property of Babukishan.

Response: as to why KD Babukishan's video was posted.... and they are absolutely right. "We just uploaded it because I’m sick and tired of seeing so many clips of people who call themselves “Bauls.” Purna Das is great, and I did not see any clips of him that show how great his is. In fact, some of them make him look old and haggard. Baba is beautiful and great – so, that’s why I put up the clip." Jai Ma all Ok

Baul History.. Soul singers, Mahalia Jackson and The Bauls of Bengal ..Samarat Purna Das and Manju Dasi Baul

Mahalia Jackson loved Purna Dasji Baul, (Babukishan's Dad) she was a vistor at their house in Kolkata. Mahalia Jackson was  a famous American soul singer, Baul Samarat (king of Bauls) Purna Das a famous Indian soul singer from Bengal. Purna Das is a legendary Baul singer and Indian Vocalist no Baul before or after has achieved what Purna Das has now almost 80 years old he has traveled the world for almost 70 years, he is the first to do what many Bauls today are trying to do. He has played on the biggest stages around the world and is highly awarded singer.

He is a classical Baul singer and most of his music was composed by Babukishan starting when Babu was 9 years old. Babu says his house was always filled with the who is who of legendary India and guests from around the world.

No Baul to this day can sing like Purna Das, however,  they sing the songs of his lineage, they dress like Purna Das who created his own style. I have read on the internet that the Bauls sang with Mahalia Jackson, only Purna Das has please use his name no other Baul sang with Mahalia Jackson.

I have read the Bauls are associated with Bob Dylan, The Beattles, The Rolling Stones, Allen Ginsberg and in actual fact it is only this family who has associated or sang with these people.. But somehow they leave this out and new Bauls singers claim this history with out mentioning Purna Das Baul???  They sing the songs from this lineage most writen by Nabani Das Baul or Babukishan and acestors without mentioning the authors or poets, when you see a poem by Rumi or any other Poet out of respect the name of the author is mentioned??

What most people do not know is that "The Bauls of Bengal" is the name of the group that traveled with Baul Samarat Purna Das, the groups name created by Purna Das when he first came to the USA to live at Bob Dylans back in the late 60's. "The Bauls of Bengal"  were called Vaishnava Bauls or Gosai Das Baul and Gosai Dasi Baul previous to Purna Das calling his group of traveling Bauls, "The Bauls of Bengal". He is the first Bauls to sing on the trains in India, the first Baul to travel outside of India. He is the first Indian Vocalist to travel outside of India starting in the 1950's.

When Bhaktivedanata Prabupada first came to New York, Purna Das Baul and his younger brother Laxshman Das Baul sang for Prabupada in Central Park. Prabupada knew them personally he knew they were direct descendants of Sri Nitai and he knew they were the original Hare Krishna singers of Bengal, he knew they were the Das and Dasi but was ambitious and chose to give their names and their story away to promote Krishna Consciousness to the world, he also chose to tell all of his disciple not to talk to his very own God brothers at Gaudiya Math telling them they were all jealous of hiim???. He also knew Purna's father "Nabani Das Baul" and Purna's father inlaw Jogesh Das who was a good friend of Prabupada's from back in Calcutta. When we get back to Calcutta we have pictures of this history and will put them together, it seems a picture in todays world says a million words.

For at least 30 years this family sang for Krishna at Iskcon temples around the world, they were used as a fundraising attraction for the temples. However, through my research I have come across very ApaVasihnava behavior now of disrespect and name calling starting from the leaders before Prabupada now printed and spread all over the internet the blatant putting down of the Bauls and name calling.

This is the lineage of Vaishnava Baul of Sri Nityananada of Ekkchakra Bengal India.

Nabani Das Baul (his father) was his Guru of course but in a Bauls lifetime they have other Guru's and one other being Sri Sitaram Das Omkarnath (he was a great Sadhu friend of Nabani Das Baul) whom Babu also loved and recieved many blessings from. It was Sitaram Das Omkarnath who encourage Purna Das to travel on the trains and sing for dakshina as at the time there was a famine in Bengal he used the money to feed his brothers and sisters.

Jai Nitai... Respect and Love for a Living Lineage.

The Roots the Seeds of Vaishnava Baul in Bengal go back thousands of years they were preserved by the Vaishnava Bauls so that all can know about Bhakti Yoga from Bengal India and Kirtan in the west brought forward by Modern Vaishnava reformers.. Thank God/dess...
Don't analyze it just appreciate the roots and sing sweet songs of Love of Bhakti from your own heart.. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna..
The Vaishnava Bauls do not build temples, distribute books or collect devotee's they were known to adopt and help people from all religions giving them all a place, they accepted all rejected people and allowed them to be who they are.
Bauls peacemakers unity makers the ektara or Gopi Yantra has been a symbol of this unity for thousands of years.. Sweet Love of all no caste, no creed Radha and Krishna / Kali and Shiva live in the hearts of all, one who has taken Krishna in a monothestic sense may ask, why Kali and Shiva?  The answer is simple, Bauls are beyond the British orthodox fundamental concepts of God just being One way. All worship is divine not just my school, or my God, Bauls talk about everybody, every Deva and Devata. They are beyond fundamentalists who put down others to build themselves up as superior. Baul say Love everybody, God is in everybody and everything see God in the hearts of all !!  Forgive all, bless all, they are the true meaning of what Vaishnava is in every sense and that includes a polytheistic sense.
Calling the Vaishnava Bauls or Bauls degraded or any name is the sign of a fake Vaishnava because this has never been a part of Vaishnavism, this is the role of fundamentalists and new Age Vaishnava who are British Colonized Bengali's and it should be denounced by any true Vaishanava who should be humbler than a blade of grass.. and I want to say the term Demi-Gods has no place in Vedic, Purnanic, or Sanatan Dharma the correct term is Devi and Devata and all are respected and worshiped. True Vaishnava is about respect and Love not about making others wrong or distorting history for fame, money, for collecting devotee's, converting people, conversion is the role of fundamentalist it is never done in the name of Krishna.

Vaishnava Bauls are the original lineage of Kirtan and Bhakti Yoga from Birbhum Bengal India they are the original Hare Krishna singers and dancer, the original Das and Dasi of Sri Nityananda of Ekkchakra Birbhum India and from thousands of years before Sri Nitai. Nitai is the Exhalted Avadhuta (Baul) from this oral living lineage who introduced Sri Chaitanya to the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. These roots have been cut out of the modern day Vaishnava reformers and when the roots are cut the feminine is also cut out. British Colonalized Vaishnavism in favor of building temples and fame and gain. Nitanyanada of Ekkchakra (1500AD) is an ancestor of this lineage the stories all untold are held within the songs of this lineage. We have no purpose to bring these stories forth other than to preserve this lineage. Om Shanti... The Bauls never needed to express these things and they were very closely guarded secrets because they knew that if they gave out information in Kali Yuga it would be used.

Nabani das Khyapa Baul

Celebrated baul singer, sadhak, philosopher, composer and great Vaishnava Baul poet of Bengal. Son of Okkur Gosain, he was the first Baul to spread Baul songs and philosophy throughout the country with his unique singing style.

He gained many great friends during his time, like Nobal prize winning poet, Rabindranath Tagore, poet Kazi Nazrul, Tara Shankar, Banaful, Kshiti Mohan sec Shastri, Dr. Bidhan, Chandra Roy and many more...

He worked for and was very committed to supporting the Indian revolution against the British during their occupation. He dedicated many songs to this effort which helped to give his people strength and hope throughout these difficult times. Joyfull, even in the face of adversity, as true Baul's are, his songs were carefully crafted with beautiful and meaningful lyrics.

Many of the writers that focused on Baul culture of the time, wrote books based on the life and teachings of Guru Nabani das. Publications can be found in both Bengali and English that sport his name and teachings. He acquired and taught a great many disciples including American poet Allen Ginsberg.

After the noterity that poet Rabindranath Tagore assisted him in obtaining, Allen Ginsberg furthered the voice of Baul culture by introducing baul philosophy, music and energies to the western world. As a result, many films about the life and beliefs of Guru Nabani das Baul were made and distributed worldwide.

Preserving this lineage.. Please if you call yourself a Baul and are singing Baul songs written by Nabani Das or anybody from this lineage have respect and love for the author, do not claim at your own.

Vaishnava Baul is most importantly about Love and Respect... preserving an ancient oral living lineage.

Baul is a Guru tradition a sanskrit tradition.

The songs were later sung in Bengali to keep it simple for the people who did not know Sanskrit (ie) similar to Tulsi Das who composed in a common language so that villagers who did not speak Sanskrit could understand what he was composing)..

Nabani Das (Gosai) Khyappa Baul was a major reformer a oral lineage of Sanskrit-ists he was a poet as were most in this lineage of Vaishnava Baul, Poets and Philosophers of Hinduism, Buddhism, Tantra and Sufi.

When one is learning or singing a Baul it is important part of the Guru relationship that one learns who wrote the poetry, where did the poetry come from, everything comes from somewhere. A authentic Baul will know all the details.

Did Lalon Fakir write the poem or did Nabani Das Khyappa Baul who was a prolific poet and most Bauls are singing his songs and his tunes without even mentioning it or perhaps they do not know. Or most Bauls are singing Lalon Fakir songs with tunes that have been composed by Babukishan, also many Baul tunes from this lineage have been composed by Babukishan and were recorded many decades ago through this lineage by Babukishan.

Some are even written by Babukishan because he is a prolific poet in Bengal from age 9, the only reason I bring this up is because we are trying to preserve the Baul songs and it does not help when other new Baul singers, sing the songs making up lineages but the songs they are singing are from this lineage.

A real Baul Guru should educate the disciple in who wrote the songs or poems and the disciple should state this when posting on the internet... Guru disciple relationship is very important Baul and so is respect.

Baul songs are not folk songs they are spiritual sadhana songs, and all Bauls should know who wrote them and give credit and respect to the poets because the world has changed and survival of everything is that much more important, Bauls are almost extinct. You can tell who is a real Baul and who is just a new Baul singer by the respect and knowledge they have about who wrote the Baul songs.

Correct that Bauls do not like rules and regulations, however there are certain tenants that go without question and that is "Love and RESPECT""..... that includes respect for the ones that walked before..

One may ask why would I be going on about this??

1) we are preserving this lineage which is not an easy thing to do, we do not want to have to copyright this lineages "Poetry" songs they are for all to sing. However, the songs will be copyrighted, because more and more modern Baul singers are calling these songs and tunes their own repertoire when in fact they are from this lineage, there is no respect in that. It is important that one does not distort or water down or create more reductionism it destroys this beautiful ancient lineage.

2) people are making up lineages but singing only songs from this lineage songs written by Nabani Das Baul and other ancestors of this lineage ... so if one is singing songs from this lineage songs written by Nabani Das Baul then it only makes sense that they come out of this lineage not a made up lineage, again RESPECT and if you do not know where the song originates please do not claim it as your own... and make up lineages ....

Baul is about sadhana, it is about RESPECT and LOVE... Jai GURU JAI NITAI

Vaishnava Baul's are thousands of years before any of the modern Vaishnava groups coming out of Bengal India.

Vaishnava Baul's are thousands of years before any of the modern Vaishnava groups coming out of Bengal India.

Vaishnava Baul lineage, Baul song written by Sri Nabani Gosai Das Baul (KD Babukishan's grandfather) Nabani Das Baul is the Baul who inspired Rabindranath Tagore.

In Bengal Vaishnava Baul's have been around for thousands of years before any of the modern book traditions or Vaishnava reform groups, they are one of the oral traditions of Vaishnava from Bengal India. Vaishnava Bauls are the original Hare Krishna singers and dancers from Bengal India.

Bauls are Mysitical wandering spiritual Bards or Minstrels. They are storytellers, poets, philosophers, musicians, dancers, singers. Baul is based on Indian Philosophy. Baul is so simple but so complex and almost impossible to understand. Baul has to be experienced to get a glimpse. They are almost extinct as all indigenous cultures of this world the roots are being broken. Baul is always about Sadhana without sadhana there is no Baul, some are more Bhakti poetic and some are Avadhuta meditation Mantra yantra tantra Yogi's. It is complicated but they always carry Radha and Krishna in their hearts and because they are polytheistic they also carry Shiva and Kali. All devata are worshiped and the feminine divine hold the upper most importance whether it is Radha or Kali. In the village would be a Ratha Yatra Cart sitting beside a Kali Temple. Bauls never talked badly about anybody. The picture below is an Avadhuta Baul, Sri Nabani Das Goswami Baul was a well known wild sadhak he is the Baul who inspired Rabindranath Tagore. There were two parts to him he was a Kali Devotee at Tara Pith and he was also a Vaishnava Baul, he deleted the Goswami name off of his name because he didn't want anybody to touch his feet, he always said worship yourself touch your own feet. He helped thousands of people through his lifetime and was legendary in those days he passed away in late 1969. He was KD Babukishan's beloved Guru and Grandfather.

Simple spiritual devotion of the purest kind. They spoke sanskrit from birth and sang songs or their poetry in Bengali to the villagers. Their poetry consisted of songs of Radha and Krishna, Radha is of supreme importance as is Maa.

What is to be understood about the Vaishnava Bauls they do not reject others, they adopt those rejected by other groups, they are peace makers and they do not just talk about themselves they talk about paths as being a way to god. They are not pedantic or fundamentalist, their duty or dharma was to give blessings they are what today could be called sound healers they are called mad but mad for God/dess.

Vaishnava Baul is very similar to a hummingbird small and delicate souls that accept all, Love all, they sing joyfully twirling and whirling in ecstatic movement humming with a heart full of love. They fly about from place to place n a trance like state of great rapture or delight. Their body is their temple, they bring the essence of the divine inside drinking like a Hummingbird drinks the nectar from a flower. Baul pulls the nectar inside and distills the essence of the divine into a beautiful honey or Rasa Juice, they play with this divine essence in their bodies and grind the essence into honey of songs for humanity to create love, unity and peace among all of humanity. Humble, Mercy, kindness, devotee of humanity and Vishnu, these are the biggest qualities of Vaishnava Baul.

Bauls are Pure Bhakti Yogi's now almost extinct like most indigenous people who lived off the land and nature, they are the soul and soil of Bengal, they are not temple builders or book pedalers. Sri Nityananda of Ekkchakra was clearly a Baul as told in the oral tradition. He was also an ancestor of Babukishan's families lineage, Babu was born there he should know not some foreigner. The stories have been totally told wrong by new age groups who came after. God/dess is watching just remember they see's everything. You can not own what does not belong to you.. You may enjoy for a while but the truth eventually comes out. This is Kali Yuga the age of backwards..

Baul Temple in Kenduli where the Bauls worship Joydev the sanskrit author of the Gita Govinda on January 14th....Photo by KD Babukishan in the 1980's

Then came Gaudiya Vaishnavism and later the Gaudiya Math with all their British educated Vaishnava reformers were book people not oral tradition people but sometimes a little closer to the truth than the modern version, whom I call new age Vaishnavism a "born again group" whose guru rejected Gaudiya Math instructing his devotee's to stay away from Gaudiya Math that his God brothers were jealous of him?? His God brothers who passed on all their Vaishnava knowledge to him?? How would this Guru know anything if it were not for Gaudiya Math.  Oh by the way he also knew all about this Baul lineage of Vaishnavism and he knew both of Babukishan's grandfathers, there are many stories to tell.

Joydev Mela Kenduli Birbhum Bengal India 1980's

Out of the Gaudiya Math came the new age group yes they are called IskCon and they completely made a mess of what Vaishnavism in Bengal is and destroyed many peoples lives. Vaishavavism was never meant to be something you hit people over the head with, it was never meant to be about hurting women and children and it most certainly was never meant to be monasitic for the general public.

I will write more on this later, it is just very sad that they became bullies on the block cyber bulling anybody that tells the truth. They have probably pulled off one of the biggest ID theft in the history of Bengal, Das and Dasi were always Baul names, yes others had this name but not everybody and especially hardly anybody from Gaudiya Vaishnavism.

To the Vaishnava Bauls the ektara (a one stringed instrument signifying LOVE, unity and peace of all humankind) is called the Gopi Chand or Gopi Yantra. The Bauls are the great spiritual messengers of Bengal going back thousands of years. These Gopi Yantra's were had made by KD Babukishan .. Bauls sing for love, the true Baul loves, Bhakti Yoga of Bengal, Baul of Bengal go hand on hand... Love Rules... Sri Nityananda of Ekkchakra was a Baul and is the ancestor of KD Babukishan.

Can you imagine how it would feel if everybody took your last name and then did not respect that name. Many have given respect but many have committed horrible crimes against women and children while carrying that name Das or Dasi, I have no idea why the Guru of the new age Vaishnavism gave everybody the Baul names he did not live in a bubble he knew both of Babu's grandfathers and we have many stories to tell of his life before he ever came to the west.

Babu's aunt Radharani Dasi and her husband Gopal Das Baul, Gopal Das Baul was the first Baul of Bengal to play the dotara he was the son of the head Pujari at the Nityananda Temple in Ekkchakra Bengal India. Babu loved Gopal Das Baul he was the best sweet maker and disciple of KD Babu's legendary Grandfather Sri Nabani Das Khyeppa Baul. The lineage Bauls are direct descendant of Sri Nityananda from Ekkchakra Bengal, there is a lineage map showing the direct lineage. They are the original Das and Dasi Gosai of Bengal India...all will be revealed in our books..

Everybody has a right to Vaishnavism and a true Vaishnava never hurts or destroys anybodies faith. To be Vaishnava is to have mercy never pedantic. A Vaishnava disturbes no one is as in Gaudiya Math's words is humbler than a blade of grass??

Lineage Bauls spoke sanskrit in the oral tradition of storytelling they have been around for thousands of years. Poets, storytellers, Mystics, Vaishnava Baul originating in Bengal... Their ancestor was Sri Nityananda from Ekkchakra Bengal India he was a Baul. Sri Nabani Das Baul and his son Purna Das Baul, Nabani Das Bauls father was Akur Gosai Das. Nabani Das Baul took the Gosai part of their name off because he didn't think people should touch his feet, he always said touch your own feet honor yourself. Bauls do not build temples, or sell books they sing in ecstatic devotion to the divine, they are almost extinct.
